Resin Proppants International was founded in 2010 as an ‘Incubator’ of JOA Ventures. RPI is headquartered in the University City of Delft, in The Netherlands. The founding principle behind our technology is combining over 25 years’ experience in engineered plastics with knowledge of the Oil & Gas industry. The result is a unique production process to manufacture recycle plastics based deformable fracturing proppants and gravel-pack offerings.

Due to absolute control of the size, specific weight and sphericity, additionally Resin Proppants International products are applied in gravel packing applications.

RPI fracturing proppants add value due to their high conductivity, which is a direct result of uniform size and shape, high temperature resistance and the deformable nature of the recycle plastic, preventing ‘production’ of fines.

All RPI Fracturing proppants are recycle plastics based and have a low specific weight, ranging from 1.20 g/cc to 2.00 g/cc depending the application. The perfectly smooth beads are non-abrasive and have the tightest diameter distribution in the industry
  • Proppants for advanced Partial mono-layers (RPI 345p-357p)

    The RPI 345p-357p product range is developed to provide uniform size proppants for advanced partial mono layers, provide excellent closure resistance in oil and gas reservoirs with typical closure stresses of up to 8000 psi (550 bar) at a temperature of 250°F /121°C. This unique proppant has a very precise uniform size distribution.
  • Proppants for multi-layers (RPI 196)

    The RPI 196 product range is developed for multi layers, provide excellent closure resistance in oil and gas reservoirs with typical closure stresses up to 8000 psi (550 bar) at a temperature of 250°F
  • Gravel Packs (RPI G336-G340)

    Accurately sized, high permeability gravel packs, with a precise size- (1.3-1.7 mm) and density- (1.8-2.2 gr/cm²) distribution are designed to fill the annular space between the screen and formation. The perfectly smooth beads are non-abrasive and have a great sphericity. In this application, the deformable nature of the recycle plastic beads, is an important contributor to maintaining high permeability gravel packs by preventing the production of fines. Both size and s.g. can be custom tailored.

All RPI proppants are polymer based. The selected recycle polymers provide increasing strength during deformation (alignment of chains). Preferred polymers have a density of 1.2-1.4 gr/cc. A ‘green’ base matrix material, recycle PET ( polyester bottle grade), is selected as a low cost primary polymer.

Advanced under water pelletizer equipment has been developed in close cooperation with BKG, to manufacture excellent 20-40 mesh beads of unique roundness and sphericity as required by API RP 19C. The production process requires an alternative pelletizing medium, replacing water, to endure the exceptional high pressure and temperature.

RPI has developed and patented an innovative solution, applying fluids with a high boiling point and low heat conductivity. Additionally RPI has developed proprietary technology, protected by patent number 1039259 and 1039260, USA (provisional) 61/579,299, to manufacture the micro beads on commercial scale.

Finally the different matrix polymers, such as pet micro-beads, undergo dual phase post treatment:
  1. to acquire the specific high strength required to endure the up to 8000 PSI closures stresses and
  2. crosslinking of the polymer matrix, to make the proppant high temperature (creep) resistant, serving fracturing applications up to 250 F.

API RP 19D conductivity testing is applied to qualify our resin proppants. As shown in the curves below a minimum conductivity of 100 mD.feet is target. To QC the production process RPI has developed its own test equipment and test method, simulating the application conditions of elevated temperatures and pressures and measure micro-bead deformation curves (force required to cause bead height loss at elevated temperature).
